Marine Le Pen has hailed the “courage” of the British people for sensationally voting to leave the European Union.
The French politician congratulated the UK on Newsnight for not being intimidated by “blackmail and lies” as she called for every EU member state to hold a referendum.
The French National Front leader said: “I think that the courage of the British people who didn’t allow themselves to be intimidated by the threats, blackmail, and lies of the European elites is a voice to follow.
The politician described the “historic” vote as the “most important moment since the fall of the Berlin wall”.
“European leaders were telling us that it’s impossible to leave the EU. Well Brexit has show us that it is possible to do it.”
Ms Le Pen is a frontrunner to become the next leader of France and said if she wins the election then there will be a French referendum.
“The majority of politicians in France oppose a referendum. They are afraid of the people.”
Asked if she believes the UK will definitely leave the EU following the vote, Le Pen said: “I hope so, because otherwise we can throw the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in the fire, together with European values.
“If the will of the people is not respected – once again – that would mean we are definitively in a totalitarian system.”
Her comments echoed those of her niece, Marion Le Pen, who called for the country to emulate the British Leave campaign’s success and leave the EU.
She tweeted: “From #Brexit to #Frexit: It is now the time to bring democracy to our country. French citizens should have the right to choose!”
