Between 1788 and 1868, approximately 162,000 convicts were transported to the various Australian penal colonies by the British government. The first waves were transported in slave ships, with a quarter of the prisoners dying on the journey.

England emptied its prisons and exported men and women who didn’t fit into the repressive and unjust country ruled by the Georgians and ruthlessly exploited by big landowners and the men running the beginnings of the Industrial Revolution.
