Statue-smashing arsonist kicked out of Italy – for now!

One gone – but he’ll probably soon be back!

A 25-year-old Gambian who, on 2 January, damaged a shrine containing the statue of the Madonna in the external courtyard of the Parish of the Madonna of the Rosary and set fire to a crib has been expelled from Italy.

When he was caught trying to flee the scene, he said it was his duty as a Muslim to destroy Christian symbols. Since the incident took place in January and he has now been deported, this means he has served almost no prison time for the offences of fire-raising, property damage and violently resisting arrest. And he’ll probably be on the next boat back.
