The British like to think of themselves as historically very fair and decent. And it’s true that, in most parts of the world, the British Empire was on balance a force for good, with hospitals, railways, sewerage systems and Christianity following in the wake of the British Army and Navy.

But while it is right to take pride in British achievements such as leading the worldwide (temporary) abolition of slavery, two great crimes do stain Britain’s 19th century imperial record: The Opium Wars to force China to accept opium imports, and the reasons for and conduct of the Second Boer War, which on 11th October 1899.
