These children live in the Boer ‘intentional community’ of Orania, in the Northern Cape. When their parents moved there a few years ago, it was barren semi-desert. Now the fields around produce huge amounts of food.
But the new President of South Africa has already announced that the law is to be changed to allow the seizure of land, without compensation. The opposition EFF – which has huge influence among the country’s street thugs – has said that anyone opposing the move will be “dealt with”.
Which means that, if you like South African wine, you’d better buy a load now and lay it down, because once the vineyards are confiscated production and quality will collapse. And that, wonderful and inspirational though the example of the Boers of Orania is, if they and their children and their way of life are to survive, they must look to do so in Russia, central Europe or South America.
Westerners need to watch and learn, because what is going to happen in South Africa tomorrow will start happening in parts of Western Europe in the not so distant future.
